Course structure

Here’s information about the course structure.

The course consists of

Ensemble groups

The summer course is built around ensemble playing. Participants are placed in groups based on level, age, and playing style. Each group has its own instructor and works together throughout the week toward two mini-concerts, where the groups play for one another.

Instrumental lessons

Each day, participants get lessons on their main instrument — either one-on-one or in small groups with others on the same instrument. Lessons are led by one of the instructors, who are among Norway’s leading jazz musicians in their respective fields.

Theory classes

We offer classes in subjects such as harmony, jazz history, and ear training. The content is differentiated for beginners and more advanced students, so that both those taking their first steps in jazz theory and those wanting to go deeper get something out of it.

The teacher’s hour

Each day, one of the instructors hosts a “teacher’s hour” — an open session where the teacher chooses the subject. It might be a masterclass, a concert, a conversation about their own work, or something else entirely. The content varies from year to year and from teacher to teacher.

Jam sessions

Every evening after classes end, there are jam sessions. They’re a good chance to play with participants from the other groups, sit in with the teachers, or just listen. The jams often run well into the night.

Concerts and social life

We hold two mini-concerts during the week. The first is an outdoor concert on Wednesday where all the groups play a couple of tunes each, combined with a barbecue. On Saturday evening there is a big closing concert where everyone gets to show what they’ve worked on through the week.

Weather permitting, we spend Thursday afternoon down by the sea, with swimming, fresh prawns, and salad.
